The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has forecast moderate snowfall in parts of the high hills and Himalayan regions of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces today, with chances of heavy snowfall in a few areas of Koshi and Bagmati.
According to the department, water levels in the Bagmati, Kamala, Koshi, and Kankai rivers and their tributaries are likely to rise significantly, reaching near-warning levels. Smaller rivers flowing through the Mahabharat and Chure ranges in Koshi, Bagmati, and Madhesh provinces may experience sudden surges.
Districts including Kathmandu Valley, Kavre, Sindhupalchok, Dolakha, Makwanpur, Chitwan, and Sindhuli in Bagmati Province, and Bara, Parsa, Sarlahi, Rautahat, Mahottari, Dhanusha, Saptari in Madhesh, as well as Sankhuwasabha, Taplejung, Panchthar, Tehrathum, Bhojpur, Dhankuta, Ilam, Jhapa, Morang, and Sunsari in Koshi Province, face a high risk of flash floods.
The department has warned that the expected rain and snowfall could trigger sudden river flows, landslides, and disruptions in daily life, road and air transport, agriculture, and tourism.
Cyclone ‘Montha’, which developed in the Bay of Bengal, is currently making landfall in India’s Andhra Pradesh. Its weakening remnants are expected to move north-northwest toward Nepal’s central region before shifting eastward as a low-pressure system.
